Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus is an 1818 Gothic and science fiction novel written by English author Mary Shelley. The book follows Victor Frankenstein, a brilliant but overly ambitious Swiss scientist who discovers the secret to generating life and constructs a giant, sentient creature from reanimated human remains. Horrified by the grotesque appearance of his own creation, Victor immediately abandons it, setting off a tragic chain of events driven by isolation, rejection, and revenge.
